How a Foodie Traveler Can Help You Plan Your Next Culinary Adventure

To us, one of the major joys of traveling is experiencing another culture’s cuisine. From the moment we decide on a destination, the research begins on where and what we will eat. We scour blogs, social media, Rick Steves and travel shows to find the best of the best, all saved with notes in trusty Google Maps and organized by destination. For us, this is a crucial part of traveling. It is so helpful, especially on a day when we are wandering around a city, to know that we have good restaurants saved nearby.

That being said, we understand that not everyone has the time or thought to figure out what each meal will be on their next trip. You are busy with work and life! It’s easy to forget about restaurant reservations or to just assume you will figure it out when you arrive. This, however, can lead to a hit or a miss. Don’t get me wrong, we have had some amazing meals at places that we just happened to stumble into. Driving around Crete last year, we stopped on an almost deserted beach with only one restaurant. The open air space just happened to have a children’s play area attached. Maeve played the whole time, making friends with some local children, while Kevin and I drank wine and ate fresh snails.

But the majority of our memorable food experiences have been due to meticulous research on where to go and what dishes, specifically, the restaurants are known for. When we have traveled with friends, they have laughed at our planning and looked skeptically as we consulted our list for what to order, but it often worked out in their favor in the end.

Food tours are another amazing way to experience the unique cuisine of another country. We have made authentic khao soi (a curry noodle soup) at a woman’s home in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Interesting fact: she claimed that she taught Gordon Ramsey to cook it and he stole her recipe for his cookbook. We took a rickshaw around Jaipur, India, for a street food tour, trying kachori, chai and lassi. We are still in contact with friends we made at a pasta making class in Florence, Italy.
